The median barrier installed in the middle of the highway splits open to create a passageway for vehicles to pass through. In the event of a traffic accident or landslide, the automatic remote-controlled opening system allows the barrier to open within 30 seconds. This enables vehicles to be quickly redirected to the opposite lane, helping to ease traffic congestion and protect the golden hour for emergency patients. These products, developed and introduced by a small business, are technologies registered in the Korea Expressway Corporation’s “Expressway Technology Market.”

"We conducted R&D for over three years and successfully developed and commercialized the product for the first time in Korea. The biggest challenge for small businesses is finding a market, and the Korea Expressway Corporation’s Technology Marketing has been a huge help in entering the initial market. We are truly grateful for that..." Since launching the online platform “Expressway Technology Market” in 2018, Korea Expressway Corporation has been supporting small businesses that possess excellent technologies but face difficulties in market entry. At the awards ceremony, eight companies showcasing outstanding technologies were honored, and selected SMEs presented their success cases. To date, 921 outstanding technologies have been registered in the Expressway Technology Market, with a cumulative utilization value reaching 1.4268 trillion KRW.

D&S Technology Emergency U-Turn System Featured on KBS News / "Expandable" Median Barrier… “Quick Response to Highway Accidents”

Traffic congestion on highways due to accidents can delay the arrival of ambulances or police vehicles at the scene. To address this issue, a system that remotely opens the median barrier to redirect vehicles has been introduced on a trial basis in Jeonbuk. (KBS News) 2023.11.30

Recently, five buses collided on the Gyeongbu Expressway, injuring over 50 people. As the accident vehicles blocked some lanes, a section of over 10 kilometers was completely congested for about two hours.
[Witness / On the 3rd: "Even during rush hour, it usually takes only 30 minutes, but this time it took over an hour."]
When severe traffic jams occur due to accidents on highways, it not only causes inconvenience to drivers but also delays rescue and recovery operations. To address this, detour facilities are installed every 2.5 kilometers to allow vehicles near the accident site to cross over to the opposite lane. However, it still takes a significant amount of time to actually use the detour. With conventional median barriers, workers must arrive on-site and manually remove the steel structures, which takes more than 30 minutes for actual evacuation. To solve this problem, Korea Expressway Corporation has developed a remotely operated median barrier. It was installed for the first time in Korea near the Wanju Interchange on the Saemangeum–Pohang Expressway. Normally, it blocks the center of the road, but in emergencies, it unfolds to both sides, allowing vehicles to cross over to the opposite direction.

D&S Technology Emergency U-Turn System Featured on YTN Science / Can a Median Barrier Open Automatically?

In the event of an accident on a highway, the most critical factor is arriving at the scene quickly to manage the situation. However, until now, making U-turns on highways has been difficult, making it hard to secure the golden time for rescue and accident response. This problem is now being addressed thanks to the realization of an idea by a small business. (YTN Science) December 4, 2024

Until now, making U-turns on highways has been difficult, making it hard to secure the golden time for rescue and accident response. However, this issue is now being addressed through the realization of an idea from a small business. A portion of the median barrier folds like paper and lowers to the road surface. This is an automatic opening and closing system that creates an emergency turnaround zone on the highway. The 21-meter-long high-strength modular system can be remotely controlled via wired or wireless communication. Previously, it took over 30 minutes to manually dismantle the median barrier after an accident, but with this system, a turnaround section can be created in just one minute. This enables rapid traffic relief, reducing inconvenience for highway users. It offers significant economic benefits—saving hundreds of billions of won in travel time for isolated vehicles, vehicle operation costs, accident-related costs, and environmental impacts. Not only does it improve highway usability, but it also secures precious golden time in emergencies, potentially saving lives. The system has diverse applications, including flood-prone roads, snowy areas, and accident-prone zones. It has also been implemented in tunnel evacuation passages to prevent collisions with protruding entrances and to secure safe escape routes quickly. The small business that developed this automatic gate system was able to bring its technology to reality through cooperation with a public enterprise’s “Technology Market.” This platform is an online marketplace for innovative small businesses with excellent technologies but limited market access. The development of the automatic median barrier was a mission-critical task. During this time, "D&S Technology," a leading company in protective infrastructure, was actively seeking new business opportunities amid the domestic economic downturn. Without needing personal connections or prior achievements, they proposed their idea for a collision-related median barrier through our “Expressway Technology Market,” and the collaboration began.
